Since 1986, celebrities, visitors, and residents of the Malibu real estate community have gathered every September to participate in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. The Triathlon raises funds for pediatric cancer research at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The event is consistently an overwhelming success; tickets nearly always sells out. In 2011 $1,120,000 was raised for the hospital’s research.
Participants in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon Classic complete a 1/2-mile Pacific Ocean swim, an 18-mile bike ride, followed by a 4-mile run. Those participating in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon International are challenged to a 15-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, ending with a 10-kilometer run. Both the Classic and the International races commence at Zuma Beach and continue through some of Malibu’s most beautiful areas. Triathlon runners are surrounded by spectacular ocean and mountain views throughout the entirety of the race. Those not participating in the race have the opportunity to take part in beach volleyball tournaments, sand castle contests, and the Nautica Tot Trot.
Since the Nautica Malibu Triathlon raises funds for such a worthy cause, many celebrities are attracted to participating in the race. Since its beginning, the event has had more than 1500 celebrity participants including Rainn Wilson, Teri Hatcher, Robin Williams, James Marsden, Jennifer Lopez, David Duchovny, Will Ferrell, and Jeff Probst.
